MTG Crossover sets singles guide

MTG CROSSOVER SETS — WHICH SINGLES ARE WORTH BUYING?

THE CROSSOVER ERA OF MAGIC: THE GATHERING

Something has shifted in Magic over the past few years. The game has always had its own rich lore and characters, but Wizards of the Coast has leaned heavily into crossover releases — full sets and products featuring franchises from outside the Magic universe, known as “Universes Beyond”. What started as a handful of Secret Lair drops has grown into a major part of how the game releases new cards each year.

The reaction from the existing MTG community has been mixed, as it tends to be whenever anything changes - the community can be quite conservative. But from a practical standpoint, crossover sets bring in a wave of new buyers and drive significant search interest. They also produce some genuinely playable cards.

Because we only sell singles at Vault of Cards, this guide is always going to focus on which specific cards from each set are actually worth picking up — not whether a particular box is worth cracking. That framing is more useful for most players anyway. Buying singles is almost always cheaper and more efficient than opening packs hoping to hit what you need.

Here’s every major crossover set in order of release, with the singles worth knowing about and what’s still to come.

LORD OF THE RINGS: TALES OF MIDDLE-EARTH (Released June 2023)

The Lord of the Rings set was the first full booster-based Universes Beyond release — a proper draft set rather than just Commander decks. It drew on Tolkien’s entire world: characters, locations, artefacts, and story moments from both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The set is legal in Modern and was a major commercial success when it launched.

DOCTOR WHO (Released October 2023)

The Doctor Who crossover came as four Commander decks rather than a full draft set, covering different eras of the show. The decks introduced Planechase variant support alongside new legendary creatures representing Doctors and companions across the show’s history.

FALLOUT (Released March 2024)

The Fallout crossover arrived as four Commander decks built around the post-apocalyptic Bethesda franchise. The decks reintroduced energy counters and radiation tokens, and came with a full art basic land cycle. It attracted both MTG players and Fallout fans who wanted cards representing characters and factions from the game series.

ASSASSIN’S CREED (Released July 2024)

The Assassin’s Creed set used a new product format — Beyond Boosters — rather than the standard Play and Collector setup. It drew on the full Ubisoft franchise history, featuring assassins and historical figures across different eras. The set came with accompanying Secret Lairs (Da Vinci’s Designs and Lethal Legends).

MAGIC: THE GATHERING x FINAL FANTASY (Released June 2025)

The Final Fantasy crossover draws on characters, summons, locations, and story moments from across the entire franchise — not just one game. The dual audience is enormous: MTG veterans looking for powerful new cards, and Final Fantasy fans who may never have bought a Magic card before. Along with Avatar, it was one of the two best-selling sets of 2025.

MAGIC: THE GATHERING x MARVEL / SPIDER-MAN (Released September 2025)

The Marvel crossover focused specifically on Spider-Man and his world — heroes, villains, and key story moments from the comics and films. The set brought in a huge number of collectors who wanted cards featuring iconic characters, alongside Commander players hunting playable pieces.

MAGIC: THE GATHERING x AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER (Released November 2025)

The Avatar crossover was the final major set of 2025 and one of the strongest performers of the year. The franchise has a huge and devoted fanbase, and the card designs leaned into the show’s themes — bending, nations, key characters — in ways that worked well as Magic mechanics. Along with Final Fantasy, it was one of the two best-selling sets of 2025.

MAGIC: THE GATHERING x TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (Released March 2026)

The TMNT crossover launched in March 2026 as a Commander-focused release. Each of the four turtles maps to a Magic colour — Leonardo is white, Raphael is red, Michelangelo is green, and Donatello is blue. The set features key characters from across the TMNT universe including Shredder, Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady, Casey Jones, and April O’Neil.

SECRET LAIR SINGLES

Secret Lairs are limited-time direct-to-consumer products from Wizards of the Coast — small curated selections of cards, usually reprints, with new artwork, sold for a short window. Because they’re time-limited and sometimes produced in limited quantities, singles from popular Secret Lair drops can hold or increase in value after the sale window closes.

WHAT’S COMING NEXT?

Wizards of the Coast has several more crossover sets confirmed. On the Universes Beyond side, Marvel Super Heroes is due in June 2026 — a broader Marvel release beyond just Spider-Man. The Lord of the Rings: The Hobbit is scheduled for August 2026, and Star Trek arrives in November 2026.

A NOTE ON BUYING CROSSOVER SINGLES VS SEALED PRODUCT

We only sell singles at Vault of Cards, which means this guide is always going to be about which specific cards are worth picking up rather than whether a box is worth cracking. That’s actually a more useful framing for most players.

Buying sealed product for crossover sets is primarily an emotional experience — the fun of opening packs, the chance at a beautiful piece of art. Buying the specific singles you want is almost always cheaper and gets you exactly what you need for your deck without the lottery element.
